Elizabeth Turner, principal consultant at the Timber Research and Development Association, has suggested that the new raft of EU Timber Regulations (EUTR) could help encouraged strong forestry management.
The regulations are intended to tighten up on any unsustainable logging and, writing in the Timber Trades Journal, Ms Turner has suggested the regulations will be a positive for the trade in the long term.
She claims the EUTR will offer increased confidence to potential investors while also adding that it would have a positive impact for the environment and support social and political processes.
Ms Turner wrote: "The EUTR may mean more red tape in the short term, in the long term it will underpin good forest management and that has to be good for timber, good for construction and good for future generations."
The regulations will come into play from March 2013, affecting timber and timber-based products made within the EU as well as timber imported into member states from outside the EU.
