Demand for birch plywood made in Russia and Eastern Europe has cooled noticeably on most Central and Western European markets in February, after a brief recovery in January. The majority of insiders are reporting a minor improvement in demand again in Germany since the start of March, although customers are frequently seeking small batches to be delivered at short notice. On the whole, demand for all grades fell short of the prior-year period in the first quarter of this year and also failed to meet most importers’ expectations. Importers had anticipated stronger demand from vehicle builders and the construction sector, primarily for plywood filmed smooth on both sides and plywood with a film/mesh surface. The Benelux region has not shown any marked improvement in demand in March, either. On the other hand, the French market is looking rosier overall. A small number of long-term contracts were inked in France as well again in recent weeks.
