As part of a re-organisation which has been in preparation since last year, Sonae Industria re-aligned its business divisions in April 2012. Operations in Spain, Portugal, France and Germany are now merged in the new unit "Continental Europe". Business in Great Britain, which was hindered in 2011 as a result of a shutdown of several months following a fire in the Knowsley particleboard plant, is now run in a separate unit. The Knowsley plant resumed operations in mid-December 2011. However, further production interruptions occurred during the recommissioning phase. For longer-term operations at the plant, Sonae Industria must modernise the wood yard. According to Sonae Industria's report for the first quarter of 2012 , the company is currently struggling with difficulties regarding the necessary approval process. There are reports so far unconfirmed that Sonae Industria is now looking at a possible closure of the Knowsley particleboard plant, which is designed for a production capacity of up to 1,900 m³/day.
