Malaysian timber products exporters must be mindful of the rising demand in major markets for legal timber and ensure they comply with new rules, said plantation industries and commodities minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok has said.
In a speech to the Malaysian Timber Industry Forum Association, delivered on his behalf, by his deputy Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin, Dompok cited the upcoming EU Timber Regulation, which comes into effect in March next year, the Lacey Act in the US, and Australian moves to ensure only legally harvested timber enters the supply chain.
The Malaysian government would continue to inform the local timber industry on the latest development in timber trade rules to ensure that the local timber-based business community was not disadvantaged.
