Growth in HPL/CPL markets shifting to the East 01/12/12

The growth in European laminates markets will likely shift to the east in the years ahead. The total market volume will jump from almost 275 million m² in 2011 to roughly 320 million m² by 2020. Western European demand for laminates will be slow to increase in the coming years. A study drawn up by Pöyry Management Consulting on behalf of the International Committee of the Decorative Laminates Industry (ICDLI) raises the prospect of a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.6% to 200 million m² between 2011 and 2020.

Pöyry believes that Western European laminate markets slowed in 2011 and again in 2012. However, the next few years are expected to bring growth. The study predicts contrasting fortunes for the different types of products. While demand for standard HPL is expected to decline between now and 2020 with a CAGR of –0.7%, the report predicts annual growth rates of 2.3% for CPL and 2.5% for compact board. Looking at Eastern Europe, Pöyry expects to see average annual growth of 4.2% in the years ahead, meaning that around 120 million m² of laminates may be sold there in 2020. The study reported that the Eastern European laminates market plunged by 21% in 2009. This downturn was largely erased by a combined growth of 15% in 2010 and 2011. According to Pöyry, demand for compact board will again fare better than the HPL and CPL business in Eastern Europe in the years ahead. The authors predicted a CAGR of 3.7% for HPL between 2011 and 2020, with a growth of as much as 4.7% anticipated for CPL. On the other hand, the CAGR for compact board is projected to stand at 7%.
