A Highland timber firm has announced an exporting deal believed to be worth around £1m.

BSW Timber is to supply one of Egypt’s largest timber distributors with around 6500 cubic metres of kiln-dried sawn timber.

The wood will be shipped to Alexandria this month from BSW’s Fort William Mill, which is adjacent to a specially adapted shipping freight facility along the shore of the west coast sea loch, Loch Lhinnie, operated by Clydeboyd.

Simon Buttress, export manager for BSW, said: “Timber is currently supplied to Egypt from BSW’s Latvian mill. Following our investment program, the concept of export from the UK is something we have been considering for some time.

“Earlier this year, 300 cubic metres of timber was successfully sent from the UK as a trial, and we now hope to be able to continue to export timber to key North African markets such as Egypt, in the future.

“This is the first time such a significant quantity of timber has been sent as sea freight from the Fort William mill, and represents an exciting future business opportunity.

BSW’s on-going expansion at the Fort William mill has involved an investment of £37m during the last three years. The mill is expected to be fully operational next year.
